If the Soul is a Porcupine – What is God?

The Soul is a PorcupineWould you rather feel deeply, or not feel a thing…?

To suppress the heart… is to miss out on the experience and totality of what it is to be human, and alive.

Only dead things do not feel, move, experience or grow. Yet so many of us are hesitant to fully embrace life and grow.

Yet growth, by it’s very nature is a pushing, driving, strengthening process. Think of a tree which endures all seasons and weathers… and yet how strong, sturdy, flexible, yielding and far-reaching it becomes. Trees have the right idea… they always have done.

(We could learn a lot from trees… seriously.)

To have felt hurt, grief, loss or sadness simply means you have traveled deeply into the nature of the human heart.

You chose to explore what it feels to love to the depth, breadth and core of your human experience… you chose to grow!

To have touched such depth within, means you have stretched your awareness and concept of the universe… and your own soul. And how beautiful is that?

To experience the full spectrum of life’s emotions, trails and teachings means you have traveled very far. You have lived a full adventure.

After all, you did not come here to sit on the sidelines and watch. You came to explore what it is, to be alive.

Ultimately all our experiences are just a playground for the exploration of one question… What is God? God is for you to experience and you to find. What is God?

That is the gift of your Life. But if we do not remain open to feeling… how can you know? How can you even know when God comes-a-knocking at your door if you are too afraid to open it, because there is a risk you may ‘feel’ something deeper, than you have ever felt before.

It is not the depth we fear – it is the loss of control. For when great love comes into our life… when we feel deeply from the heart – it kills our ego.

Love causes our ego to loose it’s grip on our life… this is why many are so afraid to feel. For to feel, is to loose control.

Now what has all this to do with a porcupine you may ask?

Well that depth, that experience – the life, lessons and love you have lived, are what makes your soul grow, stronger, bigger – just like a porcupine who is prodded with a stick!

I love Rumi and when I read his words, I can imagine a bright, smiling twinkle in his eye.

The following poem is called ‘Check Mate’ by Rumi… and in it, he it explains a little more about the ‘porcupine theory’. ;)

 Check Mate ~ by Rumi

Borrow the beloved’s eyes.

Look through them and you’ll see the beloved’s face

everywhere.  No tiredness, no jaded boredom.

“I shall be your eye and your hand and your loving.”

Let that happen, and things

you have hated will become helpers.

A certain preacher always prays long and with enthusiasm

for thieves and muggers that attack people

on the street. “Let your mercy, O Lord,

cover their insolence.”

He doesn’t pray for the good,

but only for the blatantly cruel.

Why is this? his congregation asks.

“Because they have done me such generous favors.

Every time I turn back toward the things they want,

I run into them, they beat me, and leave me nearly dead

in the road, and I understand, again, that what they want

is not what I want.  They keep me on the spiritual path.

That’s why I honor them and pray for them.”

Those that make you return, for whatever reason,

to God’s solitude, be grateful to them.

Worry about the others, who give you

delicious comforts that keep you from prayer.

Friends are enemies sometimes,

and enemies friends.

There is an animal called an ushghur, a porcupine.

If you hit it with a stick, it extends its quills

and gets bigger. The soul is a porcupine,

made strong by stick-beating.

So a prophet’s soul is especially afflicted,

because it has to become so powerful.

A hide is soaked in tanning liquor and becomes leather.

If the tanner did not rub in the acid,

the hide would get foul-smelling and rotten.

The soul is a newly skinned hide, bloody and gross.

Work on it with manual discipline,

and the bitter tanning acid of grief,

and you’ll become lovely, and very strong.

If you can’t do this work yourself, don’t worry.

You don’t even have to make a decision,

one way or another.  The Friend, who knows

a lot more than you do, will bring difficulties,

and grief, and sickness,

as medicine, as happiness,

as the essence of the moment when you’re beaten,

when you hear Checkmate, and can finally say,

with Hallaj’s voice,

I trust you to kill me.

Full Moon, Labour Pains and a Trapped Cat Story…

leo-stars-597

Just when you reach a certain point in your journey. Something new is presented to push you forward – just a little bit more.

Much medicine for the soul has been experienced these past few months. Soul medicine which doesn’t always ‘taste’ nice at the time… but once digested – you begin to realise how healing that medicine truly is.

Today I woke up to hear that my cat, Leo had been locked inside my healing room all night and most of the day.

In desperation to escape he had tried to leap through a closed attic window, and duly proceeded to bash his own head in ~ landing back to the earth with an undignified ‘thump’.

Leo walked away unharmed, but with a very sore head.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the metaphors the universe sends to us!

The last few days have felt very strange to me, and I too have felt like I’ve been guided to remain inside myself – like it or not.

Feeling like I was beginning to ‘do my own head in’, just like Leo – I had had the urge to escape from it all… but each time I tried to run from my feelings… it felt like the universe placed an invisible glass pane in front of me – until I was prevented from doing anything other than sitting with myself, patiently waiting for the energy to shift, and the universal ‘door’ to open …so I could flow forwards again, more freely.

The full moon often compels us to look at our shadows ~ those feelings and aspects of our inner world that we’d rather run away from. Yet our ‘shadows’ are simply the parts of ourselves, which are simply in need of some loving acceptance.

That good olde moon, she often manages to shine her light on all our shadows!

Yet just when I thought I couldn’t possibly ‘break through’ the uncomfortable, icky, dark feelings within. I found my way through the moon lit forest and back into the open fields and sunlight.

I had my moment of eureka – and it only came because I was pushed to go deep within to find the answers.

What I pulled out… was another level of freedom, realisation and strength.

I asked my guides why… no matter how long I have walked this path, it seemed that every once in a ‘blue moon’ …these uncomfortable feelings continue to rise to the surface, throwing me off a usually clear, bright path – and back into unexplored territory.

I was shown this is an ongoing journey and that that many of us are undergoing a process that is not unlike giving birth.

A woman who is in the throws of labour (be it birthing a baby or some other creative project) …will come up against waves/pains/a feeling of resistance… which although unpleasant to endure… actually serve to as a catalyst to help move things forward and through. They ‘clear out’ what she is ready to release.

The uncomfortable waves we’re all experiencing so frequently and increasingly right now, are the collective birthing pains, as we create our new reality.

The good news is that with every labour pain… we get a little closer to where we need to be. We move a little further into the stages of our new lives and creations… those new creations including our individual ‘rebirths’ as human beings.

To embody something new – we must release our grip on all that is old, tired and ready to be released from our energy.

Sometimes when we are in a place of spaces between spaces… it can feel frustrating, unnerving. We can feel ‘lost’ and disillusioned, until we find our bearings again. The temptation is to numb it, run from it, try to control it… or ignore it.

But truly – that is just a way to stall the inevitable. It’s much better to move through it with trust and patience in the process, as it unfolds.

But how? Well here’s my tips…

How to Find Your Bearings Again When You Feel Lost:

Go within – often it’s the last place we want to go when we feel uncomfortable inside. Our natural urge is to run from the discomfort of overwhelming feelings and emotions that do not feel nice. But to break through, sometimes we must sit, by ourselves… before we can fully move forwards again. Those feelings are there for a reason. And they are rising because they are ready to be released.

Know the feelings will not last – so the feelings are there, you know this and they are not pleasant – but it’s okay. Everything passes and nothing lasts forever. Remember this.

Expression – To help ‘shift’ the feelings and move them through more quickly as they begin to surface into your conscious experience, it can help to do one, or all of the following: Express them to a trusted friend, journal/write about them, paint them, sing them out, move, yell, dance or run as you think of them… in short, any form of self expression is better than none.

You could for example, write a letter to your own Soul – asking for guidance and simply sharing what you are experiencing.

If you are worried about expressing negative feelings because of some law of attraction teachings, I personally believe it’s much better to let them out, and shift them, than to remain ‘stuck’. You can always state before you express them… ‘Do Not Send’ or say a little prayer asking the angels to neutralise any negative feelings, as they are released.

Release – as you express the feelings and sit with them – you’ll find they will transform, begin to ease and release. Lee Harris recommends placing one hand on your solar plexus and one hand on your heart, then just feeling what you feel, as it moves out of you.

Relax – if you are too wound up to even sit with yourself – then it’s time to find a way to relax and do something you enjoy. Walking in nature is the most healing thing you can do. But you may like yoga, dancing, listening to music, cooking, or a craft project. You could read an inspiring book or watch some inspiring videos on youtube – there are plenty of healing meditations and high energy videos on my channel: Angel TV Either way, these times call for you to nourish and strengthen yourself, in whatever way feels good to you.

Treat Yourself – I find that used in moderation, card readings can recall your energy from ego mind games, which can sometimes tell us all sorts of fear-fuelled ‘stories’. They work by bringing us back into to the present moment, by showing us the way through and reminding us of the higher truth.

My medicine woman cards have been providing the most powerful messages during this month. If you would like a reading or know someone who may benefit, please check out the card readings page here …or forward them a link to my site.

Most of all - be kind to yourself!

…and remember, the journey within is the most important journey you will ever undertake!

With Love,

Sam (and Leo) x
